SWEETER GWEN ... Is Back. Eric Stanton's Homage to John Willie ~ Reconstructed! => PEEK INSIDE

Sweeter Gwen by Eric Stanton, Steve Ditko - reconstructed - FetHistory

This is not a reprint of the 1963 edition issued by Leonard Burtman, in which the publisher cut up the panels and assembled a few out of sequence. But it is inspired by that version, which runs upwards of $70.00 on eBay.

Since I have access to archival material and saw that all the printed versions of this comic throughout the years were lacking in some way ... I thought why not mix-and-match and re-assemble the perfect edition of Eric Stanton's classic, Sweeter Gwen?

I even reconstructed the cover, using a photo of the original watercolor painting, which was owned by Bélier Press publisher J.B. Rund, who purchased it directly from Edward Mishkin in the 1970s.

(I had to reconstruct the cover because the 1963 published cover image was printed with the colors off-register, creating a blurry effect, which reproduced poorly [below].)

Sweeter Gwen by Eric Stanton, Steve Ditko - reconstructed - FetHistory

Essentially, this is an original presentation of a classic vintage fetish comic (from cover to interior).

It took me a little time to put together. But I did it to highlight and honor a vintage fetish classic.

It's a funny comicand sexy too. With a well-designed narrative. It conveys Eric Stanton's playful sense of humor. This presentation is a new way of looking at it.

For those who don't know about Sweeter Gwen, it's Stanton's homage to John Willie and his iconic creation Sweet Gwendoline. The full story of its creation is detailed in my upcoming hardcover book, Eric Stanton & the History of The Bizarre Underground

The year was 1962, and John Willie was dying. Stanton and Ditko were sharing a studio, and Stanton wanted to create a tribute to his hero. Stanton asked Ditko to be involved and Ditko agreed. This was in the spring of that year just as the two were cooking up costume ideas for Spider-Man. (More about that in the upcoming book.) Sweeter Gwen and the original installment of Spider-Man were virtually created at the same time.

Charles Guyette: Godfather of American Fetish Art by Richard Pérez Seves

Charles Guyette was a sexual fantasist, who earned his living as a costumer. He sold photos of his "costume studies" on the sly. He produced custom-made high-heel boots and shoes, sold corsets, opera gloves, and other eccentric accessories. He understood the transformative power of clothing, particularly "bizarre" and theatrical fashion. He is also referenced in the new film on Wonder Woman's creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, as the costumer for Wonder Woman's real life inspiration, Olive Byrne.

Charles Guyette: Godfather of American Fetish Art

One of the reasons I put this book together was to honor the fetish community and one way to do this was to recognize and celebrate individuals who contributed to it. Charles Guyette was the first person to produce and distribute fetish art in America. This is his story, this is his contribution to the diversity of American culture.

=========================================
Here's the story:

It so happened that I came into possession of newly discovered, uniquely beautiful Charles Guyette images only recently....

How? The catalyst was Dita Von Teese.

After she mentioned the first edition in her Instagram account >> HERE << I was contacted by people from around the world who realized they owned Guyette images. (They just didn't know it before they saw my book.) So the new images in the second edition are from various countries: Germany, France, even the UK. That's how far Guyette images have traveled.

Mind you, not all the images shared were Charles Guyette images. Some were actually German ("Fleischer") and others of French (unknown) origin.

Strangely these collectors have chosen not to be acknowledged in the second edition of the Guyette book. This is their choice. Some cited their "straight" jobs, and the unfortunate stigma still attached to fetish-related material, etc. (Which I understand.) Therefore all the new Guyette images are simply cited under the umbrella of "Private Collection" in the book, along with some of my own.

NOTE: the Guyette biographical material remains the same (aside from minor changes in the endnotes). In the end, this expanded 2018 edition simply contains 30 or so more vintage images, all lovingly arranged, and the book is 25 pages longer.

I cherry-picked the very best images of the 50 or so shown to me. These images were then restored (by me) in photoshop, which took me about a month. But I was happy to do it. I couldn't imagine a more beautiful project than preserving the legacy of Charles Guyette for generations to come.

Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," referenced in the film of Wonder Woman's creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and costumer to Bettie Page, is rightly considered the godfather of American fetish art. His fetish art operation was the first of its kind in America, dealing in what was then generally regarded as “deviant” European-inspired material. In 1935, he was arrested and sent to federal prison. But what should’ve been the end was just the beginning. Although rarely credited by name in his lifetime, he influenced everyone who would follow him, particularly the publishers Robert Harrison, John Willie, Irving Klaw, and Leonard Burtman. The aim of this book was to evoke the spirit of Guyette—to collect surviving fragments of a decimated catalog largely by referencing vintage fetish publications from the 1930s through the 1980s and reconstruct a lost history. This portfolio of images is followed by biographical information seen nowhere null, and serves as a substantial introduction to the birth of American fetish art and the cultural impact of an unrecognized pioneer.

Eric Stanton and Charles Guyette: More Newly Discovered Images

Eric Stanton, Submission In Leather, Burmel Publishing Co., 1958

If you're as obsessive about vintage fetish art as I am, then your work is never done. Recently, while digging for Eric Stanton images, I stumbled across more Charles Guyette. In total there are 10, which appear in the back of a section labeled "Photos From Readers" in a booklet named Submission In Leather, published by Burmel Publishing Co. (Leonard Burtman) in 1958.

Guyette photos always convey a weird calm. Here's a selection, including some close-ups:

The model of this photo (above) also appeared in various pony-girl scenarios and corset pics for Guyette. And you may not see what's unusual about those shoes at first, but take a closer look (below).

Even the back cover features a Charles Guyette image.

The model is Jackie Joyce, who also worked for Robert Harrison and later Irving Klaw.

As I mention in the Guyette book, Burtman relied on Guyette photographs while searching for an identityor an aestheticof his own. But as usual the images are not credited to Charles Guyette, who despite his importance was relegated to the shadows.

While the images above are not in the new Guyette book, I've chosen others (over 160) that are uniquely beautiful. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the life of this American pioneer, someone who brought a new vision to the world and spearheaded an underground movement; someone who was not appreciated in his lifetime but who finally deserves his place in the sun.
