Eric Stanton and Charles Guyette: More Newly Discovered Images

Eric Stanton, Submission In Leather, Burmel Publishing Co., 1958

If you're as obsessive about vintage fetish art as I am, then your work is never done. Recently, while digging for Eric Stanton images, I stumbled across more Charles Guyette. In total there are 10, which appear in the back of a section labeled "Photos From Readers" in a booklet named Submission In Leather, published by Burmel Publishing Co. (Leonard Burtman) in 1958.

Guyette photos always convey a weird calm. Here's a selection, including some close-ups:

The model of this photo (above) also appeared in various pony-girl scenarios and corset pics for Guyette. And you may not see what's unusual about those shoes at first, but take a closer look (below).

Even the back cover features a Charles Guyette image.

The model is Jackie Joyce, who also worked for Robert Harrison and later Irving Klaw.

As I mention in the Guyette book, Burtman relied on Guyette photographs while searching for an identityor an aestheticof his own. But as usual the images are not credited to Charles Guyette, who despite his importance was relegated to the shadows.

While the images above are not in the new Guyette book, I've chosen others (over 160) that are uniquely beautiful. I hope you'll join me in celebrating the life of this American pioneer, someone who brought a new vision to the world and spearheaded an underground movement; someone who was not appreciated in his lifetime but who finally deserves his place in the sun.

Charles Guyette was a sexual fantasist, who earned his living as a costumer. He sold photos of his "costume studies" on the sly. He produced custom-made high-heel boots and shoes, sold corsets, opera gloves, and other eccentric accessories. He understood the transformative power of clothing, particularly "bizarre" and theatrical fashion. He is also referenced in the new film on Wonder Woman's creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, as the costumer for Wonder Woman's real life inspiration, Olive Byrne.

Reviews:

"If New York collector, writer and fetish historian Richard Pérez Seves had not decided to assemble what he knew about Charles Guyette (along with a substantial selection of images) into this paperback, this influential forerunner of the genre's better known exponents would have continued a lot longer as the great unsung hero of American fetish art."—Tony Mitchell, thefetishistas.com

"I've often cited John Willie's gals as my biggest fashion inspiration but I'll have to start tipping my hat to Guyette as well."—Dita Von Teese

Charles Guyette, the "G-string King," referenced in the film of Wonder Woman's creator, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and costumer to Bettie Page, is rightly considered the godfather of American fetish art. His fetish art operation was the first of its kind in America, dealing in what was then generally regarded as “deviant” European-inspired material. In 1935, he was arrested and sent to federal prison. But what should’ve been the end was just the beginning. Although rarely credited by name in his lifetime, he influenced everyone who would follow him, particularly the publishers Robert Harrison, John Willie, Irving Klaw, and Leonard Burtman. The aim of this book was to evoke the spirit of Guyette—to collect surviving fragments of a decimated catalog largely by referencing vintage fetish publications from the 1930s through the 1980s and reconstruct a lost history. This portfolio of images is followed by biographical information seen nowhere else, and serves as a substantial introduction to the birth of American fetish art and the cultural impact of an unrecognized pioneer.

TRAVELING BACKWARDS IN FETHISTORY: Eric Stanton, Eddie Mishkin, Leonard Burtman, Stanley Malkin, Irving Klaw, John Willie, and finally Charles Guyette

Now in my last post, I mentioned that Eric Stanton was not only the last "bizarre" art entrepreneur of his kind but a direct link to all of Fet History. What exactly did I mean by this?

Eric Stanton by Steve Ditko, Richard Pérez Seves

To understand, we need to go back in time -- before the days of cell phones, before the Internet, when "mail order" ruled (at least as far as bizarre art production/distribution was concerned). If we look closely at Stanton's business, The Stanton Archives (1975 - circa 1999), we see traces of Edward Mishkin (Candor Books Inc., Gargoyles Sales Corp.), Leonard Burtman (Selbee Associates Inc., Burmel Publishing Co.), Stanley Malkin (Satellite Publishing Co.), Irving Klaw (Nutrix Co. and Irving Klaw's original self-named business), John Willie, and finally Charles Guyette (who preceded Irving Klaw). All of them ran mail order businesses (with varying success, particularly in John Willie's case). All of them, in one way or another, would influence Eric Stanton -- both in what they sold and how they distributed it. In other words, he was following a tradition.

Below are a few "bulletins” -- mail order advertising flyers -- to better trace this arc. I'll start with Eric Stanton, then go backwards: Mishkin, Stanley Malkin, Burtman, and Klaw. What about John Willie or Charles Guyette? I have no bulletins (or catalogs) from either one, unfortunately, but this at least will give you some idea of how things operated in the good ole’ pre-Internet snail mail days. It also suggests how these bizarre art entrepreneurs were vulnerable -- plainly exposed as they were to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (a federal law-enforcement agency within the Post Office), who acted as “moral” censors in their day.

These last four individuals had more companies than those listed (some legitimate, some not); and each, like Stanton, produced full mail order catalogs in addition to the these bulletins, which I may reference in future blogs.

Cheers.—Richard Pérez Seves
